The eye clinic NeoVízia Bratislava has opened up a new specialized Centre for the treatment of astigmatism.
„Approximately 60% of our patients are suffering from astigmatism in the extent of 0.5 or more dioptries. They come to our clinic to get treated for myopia, presbyopia or cataract and mostly don´t even have any idea that they are also suffering from astigmatism,“ explains the primary physician of the eye clinic NeoVízia Bratislava, MUDr. Radovan Piovarči
„That is why we have decided to open a specialized Centre for the treatment of astigmatism, which was, until now, missing completely in Slovakia. Thanks to the investment into the new navigational system VERION, our eye surgeons are able to correct this often diagnosed eye error with a perfect accuracy,“ adds MUDr. Piovarči.
A precise solution in 3 steps
VERION Image Guided System from the US- american company Alcon is revolutionary for intraocular surgery. It makes it possible for surgeons to implant the toric intraocular eye lens with a perfect precision and easier than ever in three simple steps:
„We are talking about a revolutionary input of navigational technology into intraocular surgery. With the help of VERION, we can exactly map the corneal curvature, plan the direction of the placement of the eye lens and thanks to the projection of navigational lines directly into the microscope, the surgeon knows safely where to place the eye lens inside the eye. It reminds me of the navigational systems for airplane pilots a little,“ explains the new technology MUDr. Radovan Piovarči.
„Up until now, we had to implant the eye lenses using only hand drawn lines, without any navigation or other digital support. However, the new system VERION makes the surgical process a lot easier and on top of that, we can be sure that the lens is places in the eye with perfect accuracy, which means that it will correct the refractive error as well as the patient´s astigmatism with maximal efficiency,“ adds the primary physician of NeoVízia, MUDr. Radovan Piovarči.
Astigmatism – a disease that does not get talked about
Astigmatism is a so- called cyllindrical optical error, caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea. A healthy cornea has a regular, rounded shape and the light which goes through is broken in all directions and levels the same way. When astigmatism occurs, the cornea is more curved in one plane than another. The light falling onto places with a larger curvature is therefore broken in another way than in places with a smaller curvature. Therefore, the rays of light cannot run together into one optical focus point on the retina, but miss each other.
This way, the seen picture is irregularly focused. In one level it can be blurry, while in another level it can stay perfectly sharp. This significantly reduces the quality of vision. Astigmatism can also lead to an increased fatigue of the eyes or headaches.

Luckily, modern methods can effectively remove astigmatism by now. An irregular curvature of the cornea can now be resolved with a laser operation, where the laser models the shape of the cornea precisely, based on an exact 3- dimensional map of the eye. This solution is suitable for patients who are not older than approximately 40 years of age. Another gentle solution is the implantation of a toric intraocular lens, which corrects the optical error of the eye from the inside, while the cornea itself stays untouched, which helps us reach an exact breaking point and falling point of the light rays onto the retina. The Implantation of the toric eye lens is an ideal solution for patients with cataract and astigmatism, who are awaiting an exchange of their clouded intraocular eye lens.
„Thanks to the new navigational system VERION, our eye surgeons at the NeoVízia clinic are able to implant intraocular toric eye lenses with a perfect accuracy. „During laser surgeries we are using a very exact navigational system, which makes an absolutely precise intervention in the cornea possible for us, especially only in the place where it is inevitable. Now, thanks to the system VERION, we have this opportunity for the first time during intraocular surgeries as well,“ explains MUDr. Piovarči.
Therefore, the use of the image guided navigational system VERION makes the surgical process significantly easier and improves the postoperative results in implanted intraocular eye lenses.
